The Nutrition Society's Introduction to Human Nutrition textbook is a leading title for students of nutrition and dietetics, outlining the basic foundations for the study of human nutrition. Following its third edition publication, the NSTA has produced a 5 part webinar series to support its content and provide an additional source of learning. The aim of the Introduction to Human Nutrition Webinar Series is to engage those audiences that are looking to enter into the field of nutrition science as an undergraduate, or transferring from a different field into nutrition as a postgraduate subject. The series can also be utilised as a tool to refresh knowledge and refer to at any career stage.

The five webinars, each 60 minute in duration cover the topics below. You can purchase the webinar package at a discounted rate.  You can also register for individual webinars if you do not wish to purchase the discounted package. Please click on each heading for individual webinar registrations:

Professor John Mathers, Newcastle University

Professor John Mathers presents 'Introduction to Carbohydrate Metabolism', within the IHN webinar series.

Professor John Mathers is the Director of the cross-Faculty Human Nutrition Research Centre (HNRC) established in 1994. The HNRC was designated as a University Research Centre in November 2008. Professor Mathers is the Principle Investigator for a portfolio of research projects in the areas of nutrition and the prevention of complex diseases including colon cancer and cardiovascular disease. This work includes studies on the biological basis of ageing, and ranges from molecular and cell biological studies through investigations in human volunteers to nutritional epidemiology and large-scale intervention studies.

Professor Mathers is a past president of the Nutrition Society and current Editor in Chief of the British Journal of Nutrition.

Professor Bruce Griffin, University of Surrey

Professor Bruce Griffin  presents 'Introduction to Lipid Metabolism', within the IHN webinar series.

Professor Bruce Griffin is a biomedical scientist with expertise in lipid metabolism, nutritional biochemistry and cardiovascular disease. After his BSc in medical laboratory science (1984), he gained his PhD on the effects of exercise & diet on human plasma lipoproteins at the University of Aberdeen(1988), and undertook postdoctoral researchin Pathological Biochemistry at Glasgow Royal Infirmary until 1994. Since then, he has held academic posts as a Lecturer, Senior lecturer, Reader and Professor of Nutritional Metabolism at the University of Surrey. He is a teacher of undergraduate dietitians, biochemists & medical students, and postgraduates in clinical biochemistry and nutritional medicine, and an active researcher in human nutrition in relation to cardiovascular health. He has published widely on the topics of lipids, dietary fat and cardiovascular risk, and has received grants for his research from the Medical Research Council, British Heart Foundation, Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs, Food Standards Agency and Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.

Professor Kevin Tipton, Durham University

Professor Kevin Tipton presents 'Introduction to Protein Metabolism', within the IHN webinar series.

Kevin Tipton is a Professor of Human Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism in the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Durham University. His research focuses on nutrition and exercise metabolism with emphasis on protein nutrition and metabolism in athletes, healthy volunteers and clinical populations, as well as nutrition support for brain injuries. He is an author of over 100 papers, book chapters and review articles. He reviews for and serves on the editorial boards of, several scientific journals. His interest in exercise science and nutrition extends to the application of the science of nutrition to athletic populations, including the military. He served on the USA National Academy of Science’s, Institute of Medicine, Committee for Military Nutrition Research. He has helped develop sports nutrition consensus statements for the IOC, FIFA, FINA and IAAF and has served on the UK Sport Nutritional Supplements Advisory Board. When not working he enjoys trying to practice what he preaches, outdoors in the hills as much as possible.

Dr Gareth Wallis, University of Birmingham

Professor Gareth Wallis presents ''Introduction to Energy Metabolism', within the IHN webinar series.

Dr Wallis joined the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Birmingham in November 2011. In this role he conducts research and teaching in the area of exercise metabolism and nutrition in the context of health and sporting performance

Before joining the School, Dr Wallis worked as a Principal New Product Research Scientist at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Nutrition based in the UK (2008-2011). In this role he provided strategic scientific input, technical oversight and undertook human volunteer research study management in a scientific program developing innovative new product and claims opportunities for GSK Nutrition, with a particular emphasis on sport and exercise science/nutrition.

Dr Wallis’s basic training was in Sport and Exercise Sciences (Birmingham) and Exercise Physiology (Loughborough). Initially, he worked as a Sport Science practitioner delivering physiology support for high performance athletes (Human Performance Unit, University of Birmingham, 2001-2002) before commencing his PhD at Birmingham in the area of Exercise Metabolism and Nutrition. His doctoral studies, conducted under the direction of leading sports nutritionist Professor Asker Jeukendrup, focused on ‘Exercise Metabolism and Carbohydrate Ingestion in Men and Women’. Aspects of this research have made significant contributions to current Sports Nutrition guidelines for endurance athletes and impacted on nutritional product development in the sport nutrition manufacturing industry.

Dr Wallis conducted post-doctoral studies in the laboratory of world-leading exercise physiologist Professor George Brooks in Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. There, he researched in a broad range of areas related to whole-body and organ specific metabolic regulation in health and disease and during this time was awarded a Senior Research Training Fellowship from the American Lung Association.

Professor Julie Lovegrove, University of Reading

Professor Julie Lovegrove presents 'Introduction to Dietary Reference Standards', within the IHN webinar series.

Professor Julie Lovegrove (BSc, Diet (Dip), PhD, RNutr, FAfN) is Hugh Sinclair Professor of Human Nutrition, Director of the Hugh Sinclair Unit of Human Nutrition, and Deputy Director of the Institute for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research at the University of Reading. Professor Lovegrove graduated from the University of Surrey with a BSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and a PhD in Nutritional Metabolism, before becoming a founding member of the Hugh Sinclair Unit of Human Nutrition at the University of Reading. She is a Registered Nutritionist with over 30 years of research experience in studying the role of nutrition on cardiovascular diseases, with focus on the metabolic impact of dietary fats, plant phytochemicals, nutrient-gene interactions and personalised nutrition. Her work, which includes over 280 scientific publications, has made a major contribution in establishing the relevance of dietary fat quality to the development and prevention of cardiometabolic diseases.

Professor Lovegrove serves on a number of external committees, including the UK Government’s Scientific Advisory Committee for Nutrition (SACN), and previously on SACN’s ‘Saturated fats’ and ‘Carbohydrates and Health’ working groups. She Chairs an International Life Science Institute Europe (ILSI) Committee on ‘Saturated Fats and Cardiovascular Health’, and is an expert on the ILSI initiative on ‘Diet and Metabolic Syndrome’. She was Deputy Chair for the Association for Nutrition (AfN) Council (2016-2019), and Chair of the AfN Accreditation Committee (2011-2019).
